Overall condition is excellent.This is a canonical Shang?dynasty owl?form zun of composite double?owl design. The lid is modelled with two confronting owl heads featuring bulging round eyes and hooked beaks. The vessel body forms the unified, full?bodied torso of the owls. Large spiral?shaped owl wings are rendered in high relief on both sides, with layered relief carving simulating fine scaled feather patterns. Beneath the rim runs a frieze of kui?dragon ground ornament interspersed with animal?head loop lugs. The vessel rests upon four robust beast?form hollow feet carved with beast?mask motifs and squared spiral leiwen patterns. The lid opens and closes freely, with cast inscriptions on its inner face. The flat base is decorated with geometric beast?mask designs. The entire surface is densely adorned with relief and incised ornamentation: feather patterns, kui?dragon motifs, leiwen and taotie masks form an integrated decorative programme, densely arranged with powerful three?dimensional effect.Object DescriptionThis bronze double?owl zun is a zoomorphic ritual wine vessel of the Late Shang Dynasty. The owl (xiao) was revered as a sacred bird in Shang cosmology, associated with spiritual communion and apotropaic power. Owl?shaped zun were high?status ritual bronzes for noble?class sacrificial ceremonies and feasting, serving as wine containers.This rare composite design unites two owls into one vessel: two owl heads occupy the lid while the bodies share a single chamber, representing an imaginative compositional concept. Ornamentation is multi?layered with full?bodied relief wings framed by secondary kui?dragon and leiwen patterns, exemplifying the solemn, opulent aesthetic of Late Shang ritual bronzes. Four sturdy beast feet provide stable support, balancing artistic conception and practical function.Surviving Shang owl?form zun are scarce, and this double?owl composite type is especially uncommon. Substantial in weight, finely cast and well?preserved, it constitutes important material evidence for the study of Shang ritual wine bronzes, sacred?bird worship and ancient Chinese piece?mould casting technology.Material & Technical FeaturesCast bronze, produced by multi?part piece?mould casting. Separate mould assemblies were used for lid and body; the four feet are hollow. Owl heads, wings, lugs and beast feet were integrally cast in the mould. Main decorative elements are executed in relief against incised leiwen and kui?dragon ground patterns to establish clear hierarchical contrast. Inscriptions on the lid were cast in?situ during pouring. Hollow foot cavities represent typical Shang?dynasty design for weight reduction and mould venting. Long?term burial and transmission produced a thick, velvety antique patina. The piece preserves complete primary information regarding Late Shang bronze casting, ornamentation and epigraphy, testifying to the extraordinary metallurgical craftsmanship of the period.
