Description
Man Ray was an American visual artist who spent most of his career in Paris and made significant contributions to the Dada and Surrealist movements, though his associations with both were largely informal. Working across a wide range of media, he consistently regarded himself first and foremost as a painter. Man Ray was also a pioneering photographer, as well as a fashion and portrait photographer, and is especially renowned for his experimental photographic works, which he referred to as “rayographs,” a term derived from his own name.
Barbette depicts the celebrated American drag performer, tightrope walker, and trapeze artist Barbette (born Vander Clyde Broadway in Texas). While Barbette enjoyed popularity in the United States, his greatest fame was achieved in Europe, particularly in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s.
