Description
Gilt Brass–Hilted French Transitional Short Sword Bridging the Late 18th-Century Smallsword and Early Napoleonic Officer’s Épée, Featuring an Oval Guard with Short Quillons and Integral Knuckle Elements Reflecting Lingering Ancien Régime Court Sword Design, While the More Robust Shortened Blade Signals the Revolutionary-Era Shift Toward Practical Personal Sidearms. The Grip Retains Its Original Spiral Wire Wrap Over a Dark Core and Is Surmounted by a Baluster-Form Pommel. The Straight Blade Is Decorated with Period Acid-Etched Foliate Scrollwork Along the Faces, Consistent with French or Solingen-for-French-Market Production of the Late 18th Century. Showing Wear Consistent with Age and Use, With Engraving Softened From Age.
