Description
(1910-1982) RAF Flying Ace credited with 22 aerial victories, achieved success flying in WWII despite missing the lower portion of both legs from a previous plane accident. Bader was shot down in 1941 (presumed by friendly fire) and taken as a prisoner of war, where he attempted escape so many times that the Germans threatened to take his prosthetic legs. In 1945, Bader was liberated while at Colditz by the First US Army. Ephemera grouping includes a sheet wishing good luck, signed by Bader in black ink, dated Nov. 25, 1981, a Sir Douglas Bader commemorative first day cover, a 40th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain sheet, signed by Bader in black ink at the bottom, a greeting card from Bader, two b/w photos of Bader, and two newspaper articles with photos of Bader.
