World War Two United States Marine Corps VMF-218 squadron patch. The patch is schiffli embroidery. Measures 5" x 4.75". Established as Marine Fighting Squadron 217 (VMF-217) on December 15, 1942. The insignia was approved by HQMC in 1943.. VMF-217, nicknamed "Max's Wild Hares" was equipped with the Vought F4U Corsair and later in the war with the Grumman F6F Hellcat. Its deployments included the Solomon Islands, Marianas and the USS Wasp. VMF-217 provided direct air support to Marines on Iwo Jima, strafing ahead of the 4th Marine Division.
