Indian War era russet leather hand tooled McClellan type saddle. Saddle appears to be private purchase with more adornments than standard military saddles. Rear of saddle has brass shield marked "VIRG" likely name of trooper it was issued to. One piece of brass hardware marked "US Army". Consignor states this saddle was issued to Fort Recovery in Ohio, which is unusual as that fort was abandoned in the 1790's. Saddle bag present also stamped "VIRG". Also included is a newer black bit and headstall. This item has silver plaques that read "APACHE" & "BLACK". Another plaque present that reads "FORT COVERY" but this item appears newer than the 1790's. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a printout article on the history of Fort Recovery. CONDITION: items show scattered age & usage related wear such as scuffing, marks & crazing. (02-252260/MJC). $400-600.
