
A FINE GILT-DECORATED 'MANDARIN PALETTE' VASE Qianlong Of compressed baluster form, the shoulders set with gilt-decorated elephant-head handles, with an expansive finely painted figurative scene on each side within a border of interlocking ruyi head outlines against a gilt ground reserved with scrolling foliage, and set with smaller panels enclosing further scenes of a lady with boy attendant, pairs of birds, and landscapes, later ormolu stand. 43cm (16 7/8in) high. Footnotes: Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價 清乾隆 粉彩描金人物故事圖瓶 Provenance: Sir Stephen Harry Aitchison, 1st Baronet (1863-1942), Lemmington Hall, Northumberland (label) Sir Stephen Harry Aitchison (1863-1942) married Alice Mary Willson, daughter of Walter de Lancey Willson (d. 1907) of Kirklinton Park, Cumberland. Willson was the founder of the northern grocery supermarket chain Walter Willson Ltd., which Aitchison later inherited and expanded. He was knighted in 1928 and made a baronet in 1938 for political and public services in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The firm remained in family hands until 1998. In 1913 Aitchison bought the ruined shell of Lemmington Hall in Northumberland which he lovingly restored. A related vase was sold by Sotheby's New York, 20th January-1st February 2023, lot 234.
