
A BLUE AND WHITE KAKIEMON STYLE 'SCHOLARS' DISH FROM THE COLLECTION OF AUGUSTUS THE STRONG Edo period, 17th century Modelled in the form of a flowerhead, the petal shaped rim glazed brown, painted with a scene depicting scholars seated on a pavilion terrace, with a further figure and attendant crossing a bridge, all before a landscape of pine, cherry blossom, rockwork and stylised clouds, the exterior with a foliate meander and fuku mark to the base, incised black Johanneum mark N: 467. 24.2cm (9 5/8in) wide. Augustus the Strong (Augustus II), Elector of Saxony and King of Poland (1670-1733) was an avid art collector. He amassed an extensive collection of porcelain which was housed in the 'Japanese Palace' in Dresden. Another example of a slightly smaller Arita dish, 22cm diameter, 1670-1690, is illustrated by J.Ayers, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, London, 2016, vol.II, p.630, no.1463. This example bears the inventory mark of August the Strong, N:469, and is noted as having been in his collection by 1741.
