Wares decorated with mottled splashes on a black-glazed ground are known as 'floral wares' (花瓷, huaci). In order to overcome the visual monotony of monochrome black-glazed ceramics, Tang dynasty potters innovatively applied splashed glazes formulated from materials such as copper, manganese, or calcium phosphate over an iron-rich black ground glaze. When fired at high temperatures, these glazes fused and interacted, producing variegated splashes in tones of blue, moon-white, or russet (as seen in the present lot). See a related 'phosphatic' splash-glazed jar with lug handles, Tang dynasty, which was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 9 October 2014, lot 239.
