It derives from a ritual practice in Buddhism known as 'walking with incense' 行香 (xing xiang), in which a censer is carried in the hands and borne in procession around Buddhist images as part of a devotional rite. Compare with a similar incense burner with white glaze, Dingyao, Northern Song dynasty, illustrated in Song Ceramics from the Kwan Collection, Hong Kong, 1994, p.76, no.20; another example, but Yaozhou green glaze ware, early Northern Song dynasty, is illustrated in Ibid., p.180, no.72. See a related Cizhou-type cream-glazed censer, xing lu, Norther Song dynasty, 11th/12th century, which was sold at Christie's New York, 15 September 2016, lot 808. The bowl is likely a product of the Huozhou kiln (霍州窯) in Huozhou, Shanxi Province. Production at this kiln began in the Northern Song period and reached its height during the Jin dynasty. Renowned for its finely potted white porcelain, the kiln's white-glazed wares are distinguished by tiny firing spike marks (as observed on the interior of the current bowl).
