At the same time, 'fish' 魚 (yu) is a homophone for 'abundance' 餘 (yu) and thus fish designs convey the wish for surplus year after year. The motif of 'paired fish' also signifies harmony and happiness, and is one of the classic decorative patterns on Northern Song Ding wares. A similar Dingyao carved 'double fish' lobed bowl, Northern Song dynasty, is illustrated in Decorated Porcelains of Dingzhou: White Ding Wares from the Collection of the National Palace Museum (定窯花瓷:院藏定窯系白瓷特展), Taipei, 2014, p.82. See a similar but slightly larger Dingyao 'double fish' lobed bowl, Northern Song dynasty, which was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 9 April 2024, lot 46.
