He spent the majority of his professional career as an archivist in various African countries, before taking up a post at the University of Cape Town in 1978. His collection of Chinese ceramics encompasses pieces from the Neolithic period through to the eighteenth century. See R.Davids & D.Jellinek, Provenance: Collectors, Dealers and Scholars: Chinese Ceramics in Britain and America, Oxford, 2011, p.157. From the Hongwu period through the Tianshun periods, Longquan kilns stood as an important centre for the production of tributary Imperial ceramics in the Ming dynasty. As seen in the present lot, the firing and stacking methods of such official kiln wares were highly standardised. Vessels typically display a neatly scraped unglazed ring at the base and were supported on ceramic setters, being fired individually within saggars to ensure the optimal quality.
