A BLANC-DE-CHINE FIGURE OF A PROVOCATIVE LADY 17th/18th century Elegantly modelled as a lady standing on an incised pedestal, wearing a long robe sliding languidly from a bare shoulder revealing her chest on which a beaded necklace rests, one hand lifting the skirt provocatively to reveal the lower body including shoes and stockings, the smiling and serene face below an elaborate, curly coiffure surmounted by a tall hood detailed with decorative floral motifs, the whole covered overall with a crackled creamy-white glaze. 40.5cm (16in) high. The lady's attire is medieval in character, and the elevated headdress might be alluding to the hair-style made fashionable by the Duchess of Fontanges, a mistress of King Louis XIV of France. As European women were not permitted to enter China when the figures were being produced, these were almost certainly modelled from prototypes supplied by the traders.
