Comparable blue and white boxes and covers, together with Hongzhi period wares of Middle Eastern-inspired forms, such as pen boxes, kendis, and ewers, were recovered from the Lena Shoal wreck, a Chinese junk of uncertain destination that sank off the Philippines around 1490. These discoveries offer a rare insight into the luxury goods traded through Chinese maritime routes in the late fifteenth century. See a similar oval box with liner and cover, decorated with lotus, Hongzhi, illustrated in Sunken Treasure: Fifteenth Century Chinese Ceramics from the Lena Cargo, London, 2000, p.33, no.3 See a similar blue and white oblong box and cover, Hongzhi, which was sold at Christie's New York, 22 March 2013, lot 1458.
