Coming from a family of collectors, he developed a discerning and independent approach to Chinese ceramics, with a particular interest in early monochrome wares, especially those of the Song dynasty. He collected according to personal judgement rather than fashion, valuing close study, discussion, and the experience of living with objects, often refining his choices through conversation with fellow collectors and scholars and with the trusted eye of his wife, Caroline. In later years he expanded his interests to include early books on Chinese ceramics, using them to explore the development of Western scholarship and collecting.
