This technique is applied by dipping a bamboo tube into a blue glaze suspension and blowing it onto the surface of the vessel. After firing, the uneven force of the blowing results in mottled patches of varying thickness and depth of colour, giving the surface the appearance of being dusted with snow. For this reason, the glaze is also referred to as 'snowflake blue' 雪花藍 (xuehualan). The technique was first created during the Xuande period of the Ming dynasty, but production did not increase significantly until the Kangxi period of the Qing dynasty. See a related powder-blue and copper-red 'floral' saucer-dish, early Kangxi, which was sold at Bonhams London, 2 November 2023, lot 20.
