Qianlong The globular teapot with a loop handle and straight spout decorated in bright enamels with Orpheus clad in a billowing garment strumming a lyre, detailed with cross-hatching, beneath a gilt band of floral scrolls, the domed cover with lotus-bud finial similarly decorated, 19cm (7 1/2in) wide; the dish enamelled with Paris offering an apple to Venus and watched by Juno and Minerva amidst a garden setting with peacock, the rim with gilt-decorated floral scrolls. 22.2cm (8 3/4in) diam. The scene captures the decisive moment as Paris bestows the golden apple upon Aphrodite (Venus), while the rim is enriched with finely executed gilt scrollwork. This subject enjoyed great popularity on Chinese export porcelain and was repeatedly reinterpreted by workshop decorators. The composition is generally understood to derive from Peter Paul Rubens's Judgement of Paris (1577-1640), disseminated through engravings that served as the principal visual source for such adaptations. The teapot and cover is decorated with a classical mythological scene depicting Orpheus, the legendary poet and musician of antiquity, shown playing the lyre, his emblematic instrument. According to Greek mythology, Orpheus's music possessed such power that it could enchant animals, move rocks and trees, and impose harmony upon the natural world. Scenes of Orpheus charming nature were widely circulated in European art through engravings of the 17th and 18th centuries and proved popular sources for decoration on Chinese export porcelain. On such wares, the subject was often adapted freely, with simplified landscapes and figures, reflecting the transmission of Western imagery through printed models rather than direct knowledge of the myth.
