DIANE KEATON: A GROUP OF BABY BOOM MATERIAL United Artists, 1987 Comprising a Certificate of Nomination for a Golden Globe Award of Merit For Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, one 'For Your Consideration' submission pamphlet from United Artists, and fourteen black and white and colored photographs and publicity shots, one signed by Diane Keaton. (16) certificate 8 1/2 x 11in Footnotes: During the 1980's, Keaton was focusing on her visual art career and her creative project Heaven (1987), while also acting in various films. Baby Boom marked a turning point for Keaton, and presented her with a role she was truly excited about. Baby Boom was directed and co-written by Nancy Meyers and follows J.C. Wiatt, a driven career woman who unexpectedly receives an inheritance from her deceased cousin; a fourteen month old baby girl named Elizabeth. J.C. must learn to be a mother on the fly and experiences firsthand the double standards that women professionals face when they have children. Handling topics of feminism, motherhood, and workplace struggles, the film stands as a empowering examination of the American culture. Keaton loved the project, and described the film as 'laugh-out loud hilarious...Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers, the writing-directing team, were talented and charming...it was great to feel attractive and cute and funny again. I became J.C. Wiatt - snappy, sassy, and ready to go.' (Keaton, Diane. Then Again. New York: Random House, 2011, page 162) The costume designer Susan Becker outfitted Keaton as a business woman and stayed true to Diane herself, using polka dot scarves, structured suits, and pearls to highlight her personality. Working on this project led to a lifelong friendship and fashion collaboration between Becker and Keaton. Baby Boom led to another long-lasting partnership; it was the first of three films Keaton and Meyer would work on, and it made a lasting impression on both women. 'She goes deep,' recounted Meyer, 'and I know those who have worked with her know what I know...she made everything better...[Keaton] was fearless, she was like nobody ever, she was born to be a movie star, her laugh could make your day and for me, knowing her and working with her - changed my life.' (Cain, Sian. Nancy Meyers pays tribute to Diane Keaton. The Guardian. 13 Oct 2025) Keaton felt the film was, 'great good fortune. Or, as J.C. Wiatt would have said, 'I'm back. I am back.''
