Robert Boltz was the coroner in West Bend, Wisconsin from 1965-1989. He would photograph the scenes of car crashes, the crumpled forms of metal contrasting with the calm, black night. Diane Keaton, fascinated by the haunting images, would later acquire the photographic archive of Boltz and publish a photography book Dead of Night. Always with a cinematic mind, Keaton recognized the charge behind the images: 'Each car is lit with a nightmarish, chiaroscuro quality. His framing matches the technique of horror and suspense films in which shadows provide gloomy details of the surroundings.
