Description: Bridget Riley (b 1931)"Movement in Squares" Lithograph, maquette size from the original, 1964
Description – Exhibition Poster by Bridget Riley, produced to accompany the exhibition ‘Bridget Riley’ at the Hayward Gallery from 23 October 2019 to 26 January 2020.
Riley is one of the emerging 1970s artists at the forefront of collectability.
A Contortion of squares in an Op form. Riley is often associated with the Op Art movement of the mid-1960s, characterised by simple lines and forms, usually in repetitive patterns, that create illusion of movement.
At first glance ‘Movement in Squares’ seems a simple Op Art composition alternating from black to white. The optical effect of depth and movement has been created by a calibrated sequence of grey merging to black to white.
‘Movement in Squares’ invoked by its title, is an abstract interpretation and asks you to take time, to put into perspective, how light and colour create a 3D movement.
