Il est possible que le sculpteur ait ici choisi de transposer ce symbole dans la coiffure tressée de la figure. Cette coiffure rare trouve un parallèle particulièrement intéressant dans une paire de statues de sanctuaire photographiées à Ilobu par Ulli Beier, dont l'une présente des tresses similaires (The Story of Sacred Wood Carvings from One Small Yoruba Town, Lagos, 1957, pl.26). Beier indiqua que la sculpture avait été réalisée à Ilobu, bien que ni l'identité du sculpteur ni son ancienneté ne fussent alors connues. Il décrivit ces tresses comme des « boucles d'oreilles archaïques », celles-ci semblant émerger des oreilles de la statue. William Fagg photographia à son tour ces deux sculptures d'Ilobu en 1958, précisant qu'elles provenaient du sanctuaire d'Oyalakun. The figure would have been carved for a woman devotee of Shango and probably represents her capacity to embody the deity in trance. Whilst the figure does hold in her right hand a Shango staff with the typical axe at its top, the staff is unusual in that the figure lacks the axe-head motif which one would expect to find above her head. It is possible that the carver here intended the plaits to represent the emblem. This rare 'coiffure' is not unique. Uli Beier photographed a pair of shrine figures in Ilobu, one of which has similar 'plaits' (The Story of Sacred Wood Carvings from One small Yoruba Town, Lagos, 1957, plate 26). He recorded that the figure was carved in Ilobu but that the carver and age were not remembered. The 'plaits' he described as 'obsolescent ear-rings' as, on that figure, they appear to emanate from the ears. William Fagg photographed the same two Ilobu figures in 1958, recording their location as the shrine of Oyalakun. John Pemberton 3rd, writing about these two Ilobu carvings states that they 'appear to be the work of Abogunde' (William Fagg, John Pemberton 3rd and Bryce Holcombe, Yoruba Sculpture of West Africa, New York, 1982, p.158).
