This finely crafted Commander's Badge of the Belgian Order of the Crown was made circa 1900, during the early 20th century. The badge is in the form of a white enamel Maltese cross with gilt outlines, interspersed with green enamel oak leaves. The obverse features a central red enamel medallion bearing the gilded royal monogram "L" for King Leopold II (r. 1865–1909), surrounded by a gold laurel wreath. The reverse displays a golden lion on a black enamel background, encircled by the red enamel motto "L’Union Fait la Force" ("Unity Makes Strength"). A finely detailed openwork royal crown surmounts the piece, denoting its royal origin.
Established in 1897, the Order of the Crown was awarded to individuals for exceptional service to the Kingdom of Belgium in areas such as civil merit, diplomacy, industry, and the arts. The Commander’s Badge represents a high rank within the order and was typically conferred upon distinguished foreign dignitaries. This example, with its intricate enameling and excellent preservation, is a fine representative of early 20th-century European chivalric orders.
