Maple Leaf Gardens was built in 1931 at the height of the Great Depression, a remarkable achievement given the economic climate of the time. Toronto Maple Leafs owner Conn Smythe spearheaded the project, determined to provide his team with a modern arena. Construction began in June and was completed in an astonishing five months, with workers often accepting team stock as partial payment for their labour. Designed by Ross and Macdonald (Stamped on reverse) with operator Frank Darling, the Gardens featured over 13,000 seats and quickly became one of hockey’s most iconic venues. When it opened in November 1931, it stood not only as the new home of the Leafs but also as a lasting symbol of determination and community spirit during hard times.
