In 2007, a list of some of the most influential Canadians and sports figures of the time signed 12 pairs of Terry Fox's replica shoes to be auctioned in support of his foundation. Terry Fox is one of Canada's heroes. A cancer activist who began the Marathon of Hope in 1980 after losing his leg to osteosarcoma. He ran about 42 kilometres a day across Canada, covering 5,373 kilometres before the cancer returned and forced him to stop. His effort raised millions for cancer research and inspired the annual Terry Fox Run, held around the world in his honour. This pair is the 3rd of 12 pairs of Adidas replica shoes produced to support his foundation and has been signed by 11 great Canadians: Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby, Cindy Klassen, Kurt Browning, Mike Weir, Donovan Bailey, Larry Walker, Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Silken Laumann, and Catriona LeMay Doan. Muhammad Ali has also signed the shoes, as he was known to be an idol of Terry Fox. The shoes reside in a custom case made for the shoes and include a letter of authenticity produced for each of the 12 made examples. The signatures reside on the vertical white Adidas stripes and represent a combination of influential figures rarely seen signing one item. A monumental and important piece of Canadian history.
