On September 26, 1972, Game 7 of the Summit Series provided one of the most dramatic finishes in international hockey history, as Team Canada secured a 4–3 victory to level the series at three wins apiece. Entering the third period tied 2–2, the Soviets took a late lead, but Phil Esposito scored his second goal of the match to equalize before Paul Henderson netted the winner with just over two minutes remaining. The contest was played in a highly charged atmosphere, punctuated by a controversial officiating call that saw Liam Maguire and the Canadian bench erupt in protest, nearly leading to a forfeit. Ultimately, the win set the stage for the legendary Game 8 finale, completing Canada's comeback from a 3–1–1 series deficit.
