Dick Carroll holds a permanent place in hockey history as the first head coach to lead a Toronto NHL franchise to a championship. During the league's inaugural 1917–1918 season, he guided the Toronto Arenas to a Stanley Cup victory by defeating the Vancouver Millionaires in a thrilling five-game series. A noted disciplinarian, Carroll successfully navigated the team through the chaotic transition from the NHA to the newly formed NHL. Although his tenure was brief, his achievement as a rookie coach remains a foundational milestone for the organization that eventually became the Toronto Maple Leafs. This pencil is engraved, "1918 NHL Toronto Maple Leafs Dick Carroll", and was likely presented to the coach by the Maple Leafs later in his life, to commemorate the 1918 victory. The reason for this assumption is that the pencil is marked, "Maple Leafs", not "Arenas" as they were called during Carroll's tenure.
