
SIX MIXED-METAL TSUBA (HAND GUARDS) Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century Comprising an oval shibuichi migakiji tsuba inlaid with copper, gold, and silver with a bird on a branch, rice stooks, and a landscape with the moon and its reflection; an oval copper ishimeji tsuba inlaid in relief of shakudō, shibuichi, gold, silver, and copper depicting sumire (violets) and birds pecking, signed Bokuichisai; an oval iron tsuba inlaid in shakudō, shibuichi, gold, and copper with Shōki, his sword lowered, a snail, toys, and a flowering branch, signed with several tiny separate characters, too diffuse to decipher; a rounded rectangular copper tsuba chiseled in high relief and with a detail in shakudō depicting a tiger in the rain, signed with a kaō; accompanied by a Kichō Kodōgu (Precious Sword Fitting) certificate no.125 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), dated December 5, 1973; an oval shakudō migakiji tsuba inlaid in various metals and coral with sagemono: an inrō and a kinchaku; and an irregular copper ishimeji tsuba chiseled in relief and with details in gold and shakudō depicting waves and chidori, signed Ōmori Terutomo with a kaō 2 1/2in (6.3cm) high, the largest (7).
