
FOUR MIXED-METAL TSUBA (HAND GUARDS) Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th century Comprising a copper tsuba in the form of Daruma meditating while holding a fly whisk, a kite below and a mask and a battledore on the reverse, the details inlaid in silver, copper and shakudō, with a silver rim, inscribed Haruaki Hōgen and with a kaō; a heavy, rounded-rectangular sentoku tsuba with a raised rim, chiseled and inlaid in gold, copper and shakudō with a cockerel on a drum, a hen and chick on the reverse, inscribed Michitoshi saku: a Shōnai-Kumagai copper tsuba of mokkō form with a raised rim, chiseled in relief with resting travelers, the reverse with sailboats above breaking waves, the rim with dragon arabesques, signed and dated Kumagai Yoshitada, Tenpō mizunoto mi (1833); and a circular shakudō tsuba decorated with a scene of two lovers in silver and shibuichi takazōgan with gold and copper details Each with a wood tomobako storage box 3 5/8in (9.2cm) high, the largest (4).
