
THREE ENAMEL-DECORATED TSUBA (HAND GUARDS) AND THREE MIXED-METAL TSUBA Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th century Comprising a mokkō shakudō migakiji tsuba inlaid with shippō enamel in the form of folded papers; a silver migakiji tsuba chiseled in the form of a peach with its stalk and leaves; a circular iron tsuchimeji tsuba decorated with turnips in shippō enamels and copper and shakudō inlays, applied with a copper rope rim; a rounded rectangular brass migakiji aori tsuba chiseled in shishiaibori and inlaid in relief of gold and shakudō depicting an owl on a branch by moonlight, signed Toshimitsu; an oval brasstsuba decorated in Chinese-style cloisonné enamelswith a carp, flowers, and waves; and a rounded square brass tsuba with an applied shakudō rim, finely chiseled with a sayagata (key-fret) pattern and inlaid in copper and shakudō with kuyōmon ('nine-luminary' crests) 3in (7.6cm) high, the largest (6).
