
GASSAN LINEAGE (CIRCA LATE 16TH CENTURY) A Tantō with Mounts Muromachi period (1333-1573), 16th century Of hirazukuri configuration forged in ayasugi hada with visible jinie and a suguha tempered edge based in nie, the ubu tang with one hole, singed Gassan, with a one-piece silver habaki, 9 1/2in (24.2cm), in a wood shirasaya storage scabbard; the aikuchi goshira-e comprising a black-lacquer saya decorated with swirling clouds in red and silver lacquer, the tsuka of same lacquered black and fitted with shakudō and gilt menuki formed as eagles, and silver fittings including fuchi-gashira, kozuka, kōgai, kurikata, tsunogaeshi and kojiri all chiseled with crashing waves raised in relief 15 1/4in (38.7cm) long overall (3).
