THREE TANTŌ IN SHIRASAYA Muromachi (1333-1573) or Momoyama (1573-1615) period, Edo period (1615-1868), and Taisho era (1912-1926), 16th, 19th, and 20th centuries The first hirazukuri, iorimune forged in itamehada with a narrow suguha tempered edge turning to gunome near the machi, both sides chiseled with bohi ni tsure hi, the machi okuri tang with three holes, later file marks and signed Wakasa no kami Ujifusa, 11in (27.9cm) long, with a two-piece silver habaki; the second hirazukuri, iorimune forged in running itamehada with a gunome tempered edge, the ubu tang with two holes and kesho file marks, 8 1/4in (21cm) long, with a one-piece gilt-metal habaki; the third morohazukuri forged in ko-itamehada with a suguha tempered edge, the ubu tang with one hole (partially plugged), kesho file marks, and signed Roka no jū Nobuhide, 8 1/2in (21.6cm) long, one-piece silver-foil habaki (3).
