
ATTRIBUTED TO MONJU A Rikkoku Wakizashi with Impressive Mounts Muromachi period (1333-1573), 14th century Sugata (configuration): honzukuri, iorimune, chū-gissaki, deep toriizori Kitae (forging pattern): tightly packed ko-itamehada in jinie Hamon (tempering pattern): suguha based in nie with nioi, nijuba, sunagashi, and kinsuji Boshi (tip): suguha with hakikake Nakago (tang): ubu, slightly machi okuri with one hole Habaki (collar): one-piece, copper Nagasa (length from tip to beginning of tang): 18in (45.7cm) Motohaba (width at start of tempered edge): 7/8in (2.2cm) Sakihaba (width before tip): 5/8in (1.6cm) In a shirasaya (wood storage scabbard) with old sayagaki written by Hon'ami Yaburō erroneously attributing this sword to Yamato Kaneyoshi The 19th-century wood koshira-e comprising a finely carved saya decorated with a bold dragon in clouds in low relief agains a cracked-ice pattern and frames by lightning patterns and densely carved concentric ribs, fitted with a brass kojiri and koiguchi, and a wood kozuka handle applied with a gilt coiling dragon, the dark-wood tsuka carved with swirling clouds encircled by a light-colored wood dragon carved in bold relief, mounted with shakudō fuchi-gashira chiseled with clouds and nanako patterns, the oval brass tsuba chiseled with a dragon in clouds in shishiaibori 27in (68.6cm) long overall (2).
