
FUJIWARA HIROSHIGE (ACTIVE CIRCA 1688) A Shimohara Katana with Mounts Edo period (1615-1868), late 17th century Of honzukuri, iorimune, chū-gissaki, toriizori configuration with a broad mihaba forged in itamehada with jinie and with a chōji mindare tempered edge based in nie, with ashi, yo, chikei, and sunagashi, ending in a ko-maru bōshi with some hakikake, the slightly machiokuri tang with one hole, kiri file marks, and signed Sagami no kami Fujiwara Hiroshige, 27 1/4in (69.2cm) long, 5/16in (8mm) thick at the machi, with a two-piece gold-foil habaki, in a wood shirasaya storage scabbard; the 19th-century koshira-e comprising a black and brown saya lacquered to resemble cherry bark, the sides with two longitudinal stripes of undecorated lacquer, the tsuka wrapped in black silk over same fitted with a gold and shakudō nanako fuchi with a boar running by rocks, and a gold and shakudō kashira with rocks and bamboo, the gold and shakudō menuki formed as a traveler resting by a wrapped parcel, with an iron Kyō-sukashi tsuba chiseled as a chrysanthemum flower (3).
