
CHOUNSAI TSUNATOSHI (ACTIVE CIRCA 1820-1844) A Musashi Wakizashi in Mounts Edo period (1615-1868), dated 1822 Of honzukuri, iorimune, chū-gissaki, toriizori configuration forged in ko-itamehada with a suguha tempered edge based in nie, the ubu tang with one hole, sujikai file marks, signed Katō Bansai Tsunatoshi, and dated Bunsei gonen jūgatsu no hi (A day in the 10th month of 1822), 14 1/2in (36.8cm) long, with a one-piece gilt habaki; the aikuchi goshira-e comprising of a wood saya carved with ribs mounted with gilt-copper hardware including fuchi-gashira, koiguchi, kozukaguchi, and kojiri, all finished with a stone surface, the Kyō-kanagushi kozuka and kōgai decorated with gold foil and with Chinese lions in gold takazōgan against a gilt nanako ground, the tsuka wrapped with same and mounted with gilt nagamenuki decorated with cherry blossoms 20 1/4in (51.4cm) long overall (3).
