WORLD WAR II - NAVAL INTELLIGENCE Report of Second Visit to Germany re Submarine Construction. July-August, 1945, Parts I and II, roneographed typescript, numerous blueprint schematic plans (several folding), 39 mounted photographs (typically 140 x 100mm.) with inked captions, 8 leaves photo-printed with 16 similar images, 28 individually paginated appendices in Part 2 (including many xerographed diagrams and tables, several folding, some hand-coloured), light toning, original post binding of dark blue morocco-grained cloth-backed boards, ink titles on upper covers, light wear, foolscap 8vo (350 x 220mm.), [Dept. of the Director of Naval Construction (D.N.C.), 1945] Footnotes: FLEMING'S WAR: ONE OF THE SECRET MISSIONS BEHIND THE MAKING OF JAMES BOND. A highly-detailed report on the German submarine programme, focussing on Dr. Walter's submarine projects and propulsion systems at the Walterwerke, Kiel, based on information supplied by T-Force. T-Force ('Target Force') was the operational arm of a joint British-American military mission to secure German scientific and industrial technology before it could be destroyed by retreating German forces during the final stages of the Second World War. Guided by Commander Ian Fleming (later, of course the author of the James Bond books), T-Force captured Germany's entire Naval Archive held at the research centres in the port of Kiel. This provided the Allies with comprehensive information on technology and engineering for V-2 rockets, Messerschmitt fighters and U-boats. The present report was drafted by the Admiralty team responsible for interrogating leading Nazi scientists who had worked specifically on submersibles, U-boats and midget subs. Fleming incorporated the activities of T-Force in his Bond novels, particularly in Moonraker (featuring rockets), and numerous underwater sequences in other volumes. Unclassified, but produced for very limited distribution; we located only one other set, in the departmental papers of the D.N.C. held at the National Archives, Kew [ADM 213/573 and 574]. Provenance: Capt. Alfred John Sims (1907-1977), ownership inscription on upper covers. A British naval architect, known for his significant contributions to warship design, Sims served as Director of the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors (R.C.N.C.); Jon Gilbert, Ian Fleming bibliographer.
