An English tea caddy circa 1873-1891 Of rectangular form, the lid engraved 'THE MIDLAND' encircling the letter 'P' and surmounted by a crown, in silver plate, height 7.0 cm, length 13.0 cm, width 9.0 cm, weight 500gms. Footnotes: Purportedly owned by the first Captain of The Midland ship, built in 1873 at Renfrew by W. Simons & Co. Accompanied by a letter from the Secretary of Lloyd's Register of Shipping, dated 18th June 1971, confirming the details of the ship, including its shipwreck on 10th November 1891, then sailing under the American flag and renamed the 'Jamaica' when the ship was wrecked on Sapodilla Cays, Guatemala, whilst on a voyage from New York to Honduras and Guatemala.
