The canvas has been lined. Stretcher marks are slightly visible. Light surface dirt and occasional superficial abrasions. Fine craquelure throughout with the most noticeable paint shrinkage to the sitter's left cheek, hair and neckline. An abrasion with associated restoration is visible in natural light to the right side of the upper edge. Inspection under UV reveals a cloudy varnish, which has yellowed to the extreme lower edge. Areas of restoration are present throughout, with notable strengthening to the sitter's visage and hair, collar, to his right shoulder, and to the lower centre of his robe. Further restoration appears to be present to the background, however the thick varnish renders this difficult to read.
High resolution images are available upon request, please contact the department directly at pictures@dreweatts.com
PLEASE NOTE: ALL LOTS ARE LOCATED SACKVILLE WEST STORAGE IN ANDOVER SP10 3SA.
