Description

This color lithograph, titled The Clearing, depicts a classic American pastoral scene of rural labor. The central composition shows two men utilizing a team of two horses, one white and one brown, to extract a tree stump from the ground. Additional workers and horses are visible in the middle ground near a small cabin, all set against a hilly landscape. The print features the title THE CLEARING in the lower center margin and a publisher attribution in the lower right margin that reads COPYRIGHT 1908 BY A. FOX, PHILA. The artwork is housed under glass in an ornate, gilded composition frame with scrolled corner motifs. The reverse shows a cardboard backing secured with metal glazier points and an attached hanging wire. No measurements are provided as no ruler is present in the images.
