I was in the RAF CCF at Canford School and went on summer camp to RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. At the time it was a high-readiness nuclear deterrent base with 44 Squadron flying Vulcan bombers. We were attached to the squadron. During the CCF camp (10 days or maybe 14 days) we were introduced to all aspects of RAF life. During this, as a geeky child, I desperately wanted to be an RAF Navigator, and so a pair of cadets were assigned each to a Vulcan Navigator for a particular aircraft. I was mentored by Mike, a flight lieutenant who was an experienced Vulcan Plotter Navigator who over the period of our stay, explained the aspects of his job: The two navigators got the two assigned cadets to 'help' them plan low level navigation routes and mission points for dummy training sorties etc. At the end of the camp, my Navigator kindly gave me his old discontinued service watch, as they had recently been issued with newer automatic types.'
