Addington was elected to the House of Commons in 1784 as Member of Parliament for Devizes. A childhood friend of Pitt the Younger, the pair worked closely during their respective terms as Prime Ministers. Addington served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1798-1801, and as Prime Minister from 1801-1804, a position he reluctantly accepted when William Pitt the Younger resigned. Addington later served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary. Addington's time in British politics took place during a turbulent period in British and European history that included the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Addington was created Viscount Sidmouth, of Sidmouth in the County of Devon, on 12 January 1805.
