A George II silver salver Lewis Herne & Francis Butty, London 1758 Of octafoil outline with cast fruiting vine border, on four ornate open-work scroll bracket feet, the centre with engraved script initials below a coronet, within a foliate rococo cartouche, the reverse with later engraved inscription: 'This Testamentary Memorial of Esteem and Regard was left to Viscount Sidmouth by his dear and lamented friend, The Dowager Lady Ellenborough, August 1843', diameter 36cm, weight 43oz. The Dowager Lady Ellenborough: Ann Towry (22 June 1769 - 16 August 1843), daughter of George Phillips Towry of Foliejon Park at Winkfield in Berkshire and his wife, Elizabeth, married Edward Law, 1st Baron Ellenborough on 17 October 1789. Thence by descent. She was mother in law to the notorious Jane Elizabeth Digby (3 April 1807 - 11 August 1881), Lady Ellenborough (1824-1830), an English aristocrat, famed for her remarkable love life and lifestyle. She had four husbands and many lovers, including Lord Ellenborough, Governor-General of India, King Ludwig I of Bavaria and his son King Otto of Greece, Bohemian nobleman and Austrian statesman Prince Felix zu Schwarzenberg, and the Greek general Christodoulos Hatzipetros. She died in Damascus, then part of the Ottoman Empire, as the wife of Arab sheikh Medjuel el Mezrab, who was 20 years her junior. The inscription here refers to Henry ADDINGTON (1757-1844) 1st Viscount of Sidmouth. Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth, (30 May 1757 - 15 February 1844) Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth was a British Tory statesman and a prominent figure in public affairs from 1789-1824. Addington was elected to the House of Commons in 1784 as Member of Parliament for Devizes. A childhood friend of Pitt the Younger, the pair worked closely during their respective terms as Prime Ministers. Addington served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1798-1801, and as Prime Minister from 1801-1804, a position he reluctantly accepted when William Pitt the Younger resigned. Addington later served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary. Addington's time in British politics took place during a turbulent period in British and European history that included the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Addington was created Viscount Sidmouth, of Sidmouth in the County of Devon, on 12 January 1805.
