A George III silver oval salver Benjamin Laver, London 1784, with incuse duty mark With bead rim, on four bead scroll and acanthus bracket feet, centred with an engraved shield with crest, a cat-o-mountain sejant guardant argent pellettee and arms of John Hiley ADDINGTON (1759-1818) and his wife Mary UNWIN (1774-1833), within an oval reserve with laurel band, length 46.3cm, weight 61oz. Footnotes: Provenance: Collection from The Sidmouth Family. This present lot has a connection to ADDINGTON and the viscountcy of Sidmouth. These are the arms of John Hiley ADDINGTON (1759-1818) and his wife Mary UNWIN (1774-1833). They were married at Stock, Essex in 1785 and the assay of 1784 suggests that this is a marriage item. John Hiley ADDINGTON was the second son of the physician Anthony ADDINGTON (1713-1790) by his wife Mary HILEY (1722-1777) daughter of the Revd. Dr. Haviland John HILEY (1689-1753) headmaster of Reading Grammar School and his wife Eleanor TERRELL (1688-1768). He served as an MP 1787-1818 at Truro, Wendover, Winchelsea, Bossiney and Harwich. His elder brother was Henry ADDINGTON (1757-1844), the prime minister of the UK and Speaker of the House of Commons, later created Viscount Sidmouth. Mary UNWIN was the daughter of Henry UNWIN of Stock, Essex. There is very little information about the family beyond that they were armigerous and may be descended from the UNWYN family of Castle Hennington, Essex. The marshalling of the arms in the engraving suggests that she was her father's heir.
