A Charles II silver lidded tankard maker's mark TL with device below, London 1670 The hinged stepped flat top cover with scroll thumb piece, the rim of the cover with inscription, quoting a speech given by Field Marshall Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig 'Let us so act that the dead may not have died in vain, nor the living striven in vain.' Haig of Bemersyde. Armistice Day, 1920. the slightly tapering body on a moulded skirted foot, the sides later engraved with two armorials in shield reserves, one representing the arms of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners and the other of the donor, within scroll plume mantling, presentation inscription to the front 'The Gift of Major Samuel Weil Master of the Gardeners' Company 1919-20', height 18.2cm, weight 31.5oz.
