Footnotes: John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon, PC, DCL, FRS, FSA (1751 - 1838) was a British barrister and politician. He served as Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. Scott was the son of a Newcastle coal merchant and won a scholarship to University College, Oxford. He was called to the bar in 1776 and became a KC in 1783. Then became solicitor-general in 1788, attorney-general in 1793 and Lord Chief Justice of Common Pleas in 1799. Scott was knighted in 1788, and in 1799 was created Baron Eldon of Eldon. He was appointed Lord Chancellor in 1801. In the same year, he was elected as M.P. for Weobley. Scott was considered the greatest lawyer of his time. He developed trademark law by issuing numerous injunctions against merchants who sold goods bearing the name of other traders and also consolidated equity into a working body of legal principles. In 1821, Lord Eldon had been created Viscount Encombe and Earl of Eldon by George IV. Scott was married to Elizabeth Surtees commonly known as Bessie. They had had two sons and two daughters that survived childhood, Scott survived almost all his immediate relations. His brother William died in 1836. Scott died in London on 13 January 1838. Scott left an estate of £2,300,000 this was during a period when estates of a million pounds were very uncommon.
