NEIL PHILIP LOVESEY: A cased silver and silver-gilt chess set, Neil Philip Lovesey, London 1974, each piece with stamped number '1' Comprising of thirty-two silver and silver-gilt silver pieces, each design on a circular base, with bark-effect textured band, the Kings with pierced crowns, the Queens crowns are set with a single garnet, all contained in a bespoke fitted carrying case, with lift out tray, together with a tiled and wood framed chess board, height of king 8cm. (33) Footnotes: It is believed this is the first set made, thus being stamped number 1, another set is in The Pearson Collection also assayed for 1974. Neil Philip Lovesey was a tutor at Southfield Park Arts Centre in Bracknell in the early 1970's. He had been an apprentice to Gerald Benney until 1974 and then set up his own. He is included in a staff photograph that was taken in around 1973, probably outside Gerald Benney's showroom and workshops at 36, Bear Lane, Southwark, London.
