A Victorian silver quaich S Smith & Son, London 1875 Of typical form, with openwork cast acanthus leaf handles, with cast frieze decoration with Bacchic masks and tigers amongst fruit vines, with engraved cest below an Earls coronet raised on spreading pedestal base, height 9.8cm, weight 14oz. Footnotes: This is the crest associated with the arms of George Philip STANHOPE (1822-1883) 8th Earl of Chesterfield. He succeeded his cousin George Philip Cecil Arthur STANHOPE (1831-1871) the 7th Earl. He was the son of George Charles STANHOPE (1789-1833) by his wife Jane GALBRAITH (1795-1873). He married three times: (1) in 1856 Marianne ROCHE (1837-1875) the daughter of William ROCHE; (2) in 1877 Catherine Jane Jarvis BOND (died 1880) daughter of John Hilderbrand BOND of Belfast; (3) in 1882 Agnes PAYNE (1847-1893) daughter of James PAYNE of Manchester.
