Literature
Crush was introduced in 1916 in Chicago by beverage chemist and entrepreneur Neil C. Ward in partnership with Clayton J. Howell. The brand was originally marketed as “Ward’s Orange Crush” and was notable for containing orange pulp in its early formulation, distinguishing it from competing fruit sodas. The ribbed bottle design, intended to resemble the texture of an orange, became an early and recognizable branding innovation.
Orange Crush was among the first fruit-flavored carbonated soft drinks to achieve national distribution in the United States during the early twentieth century. The company expanded its product line in the 1920s to include lemon and lime variations, though orange remained its flagship flavor. Ownership of the brand changed multiple times over the decades: it was acquired by the American Beverage Corporation in 1980, and later rights were divided geographically. In the United States, Crush eventually became part of the portfolio of Keurig Dr Pepper (through predecessor companies), while in Canada it has been produced and distributed by regional bottling partners.
Today, Orange Crush remains one of North America’s longest-running fruit soda brands and a significant early example of national flavor-brand marketing in the soft drink industry.
