Late 1940s-1950s. Single-sided porcelain (SSP). The "Standard of California" refers to the Standard Oil Company of California (Socal), which was the primary descendant of the Standard Oil trust after its breakup in 1911. The Standard Oil Company held a monopoly on oil until 1911, when the U.S. Supreme Court dissolved the trust and broke up the monopoly, after which independent entities such as Socal emerged. In the mid 20th century, Standard Oil used a network of independent wholesale distributors to reach rural or specific sectors. Wright likely held a franchise or agency agreement to distribute Standard Oil products within a specific California territory. This sign was a co-branded advertising. It told customers that while they were buying from a local neighbour (Wright), they were getting the trusted product of a massive corporation (Standard). From the Pat and Late Geoff Hopps Collection. Grade: 8.25. Very good colour and gloss. Edges have chips and are rough. Scuffs and scratches are most notable against the blue background. Scattered dime-sized chips. One 2" chip affects the "W" in "Wright". 1.5" and 3" chips affect the "Standard" script.
