Literature
Canada Dry was established in 1904 in Toronto, Ontario, by Canadian chemist and pharmacist John J. McLaughlin. McLaughlin had previously operated a successful carbonated water business before developing a milder, less sweet ginger ale that he branded “Canada Dry Pale Ginger Ale” in 1907. The term “dry” was borrowed from contemporary wine terminology, signaling a crisp, refined taste that distinguished it from sweeter ginger ales of the period.
Canada Dry received a Royal Warrant in 1907 to supply beverages to the Governor General of Canada, enhancing its prestige. During the 1920s, the brand gained widespread popularity in the United States, particularly during Prohibition (1920–1933), when ginger ale was frequently used as a mixer to mask the taste of illicit spirits. This association significantly accelerated its American market expansion.
In 1923, the company reorganized as Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Inc., and over subsequent decades it underwent several ownership transitions. It became part of Norton Simon Inc. in 1964, later Cadbury Schweppes in 1986, and ultimately joined Keurig Dr Pepper in 2018 following corporate mergers.
Today, Canada Dry remains one of the most recognizable ginger ale brands globally, synonymous with both premium soft drinks and cocktail mixers.
