Description
1932- late 1940s. Double-sided porcelain (DSP). Die-cut. Champlain Oil Products Limited was founded in 1932 by American investor Harry Snyder. Snyder worked closely with Charles-Émile Trudeau (father of Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and grandfather of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau), who had already built a successful network of 30 service stations through his own company, the Automobile Owners' Association. In 1932, Snyder purchased Trudeau's company and its 30 stations and formed Champlain Oil Products Limited. Trudeau was the first General Manager of the new company and was crucial in maintaining a local, French-Canadian identity for the brand. This die-cut, bilingual sign is a direct reflection of this targeted regional branding. The name "Champlain" was chosen to leverage a powerful Quebec identity and create a sense of historical prestige by using the name of Samuel de Champlain, a 17th-century explorer who founded Quebec City in 1608. Authenticated by The Authentication Company (TAC #8.75/8.75). All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for free delivery to the Check the Oil Show on June 26, 2026. 44.5” x 75.5”.
